Knowns and Unknowns: An Experience Report on Discovering Tacit Knowledge of Maritime Surveyors

چکیده
[Context] Requirements elicitation is an essential activity to ensure that systems provide the necessary functionality users, and they are fit for purpose. In addition traditional ‘reductionist’ techniques, use of observations ethnography-style techniques have been proposed identify requirements. [Research Problem] One frequently heard issue with observational costly use, as developers who would partake, lose considerable development time. Observation also does not guarantee all requirements identified, so luck plays a role. Very few experience reports exist evaluate in practice, organizations it difficult assess whether observation worthwhile activity, given its associated cost. [Results] This report presents experiences from DNV, global leader providing maritime services renewing information system support expert users. We draw on several data sources, covering insights both The were collected through 9 interviews users developers, over 80 h prospective domain. capture ‘knowns’ ‘unknowns’ highlight importance studies. [Contribution] While we conclude uncovered, which key understand their concerns.

Knowns and Unknowns
The current work reviews literature on the nature of stalking. Despite its nebulous nature and differing legal and clinical definitions of stalking, researchers and practitioners are referring to the same phenomenon. Stalking is chronic, consisting of a number of nuisance behaviors that appear consistent over countries and samples. Different categorizations of stalkers and their victims exist, ...

Donald Rumsfeld famously identified three classes of knowledge: known knowns, known unknowns and unknown unknowns. The three knowledge classes map surprisingly well onto requirements knowledge but are all outside the scope of this panel. Our focus is on what Rumsfeld missed: unknown knowns. In RE terms, an unknown known is knowledge that a person (say, a customer) holds, but which they withhold...

متن کاملGeomagnetic excursions: Knowns and unknowns
[1] Geomagnetic excursions are short-lived episodes when Earth’s magnetic field deviates into an intermediate polarity state. Understanding the origin, frequency, amplitude, duration, and field behavior associated with excursions is a forefront research area within solid earth geophysics. Recent advances in excursion research are summarized here, and key further research is suggested to resolve...
